The start of training for Black Wings Linz is just around the corner. The Upper Austrians put their trust in Phillip Lukas, a young Austrian coach. In an interview with the “Kronen Zeitung”, the 42-year-old talks about the new season, Rick Nashheim and why he is the only local head coach.
“There’s a certain excitement there, so far I’ve almost only been on the phone, planning and watching players,” says Lukas, before he can finally go on the ice with his cracks. As a former player, he naturally knows how important the first training session is: “I think I have a good sense of communication, I don’t beat around the bush a lot, I’ll get to the point what I expect.”
But why is there almost never a local head coach in the league. Philipp Lukas cannot answer that unequivocally either, but addresses the lack of trust in Austrians and also that the domestic solutions have not really proven themselves in the past.
Late in the off-season, Black Wings Linz hired Rick Nasheim as chief scout. Lukas is very happy about it, as there was a long discussion about whether this position should be filled: “It was a good idea, he knows the club, the league, the market and the agents, he helped us a lot in putting the team together. “
When asked about his goal for the new season, Lukas refuses to look at his cards: “Even if you don’t want to hear it – I have a goal, but I’ll keep it to myself.”
