“I’ll have what she has”
New York displays Jewish food specialties in the museum
Bread with smoked meat, bagels with cream cheese and pickles: Jewish delis have a long tradition in New York, many fans – and have even become a museum of it.
Jewish gastronomies have long enriched the New York food scene. The New-York Historical Society (NYHS) is showing the “She I’ll Have What She She She’s Ave: The Jewish Deli” exhibit in Central Park in Manhattan through April 2, 2023.
The quote comes from the cult comedy “Harry and Sally” from 1989. Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) are sitting in the Jewish deli “Katz’s” and Harry claims that no woman can fake an orgasm for him. Afterward, Sally does just that, deceptively real and in the middle of the restaurant – after which a woman at the table next to her tells the waiter, “I want exactly what she had!”
The show, previously seen at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, is “delightful” and has “cultural significance,” said NYHS director Louise Mirrer. “And we wouldn’t be surprised if visitors leave craving a smoked meat sandwich.” You can see mainly objects from the history of the so-called delicatessens. Founded in the early 19th century, the Historical Society is primarily devoted to the history of metropolitan New York.
