Ilkay Gundogan Ends International Career: ‘It’s High Time to Retire’ – Sport

“I am very proud to have played 82 matches for the national team,” said the 33-year-old midfielder, who plays for the Spanish club Barcelona and has scored 19 goals for the national team.

The match between Spain and Germany, hailed by the media as an early final, did not disappoint. It was a magnificent and dramatic spectacle, with the visitors emerging victorious thanks to a goal late in extra time by Mikel Merino.

Gundogan made his debut for the German national team in 2011 under coach Joachim Loew. Due to injury, the Gelsenkirchen-based player missed the 2014 World Cup, where Germany triumphed. In 2023, he took over the captaincy from goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

He joined Barcelona a year ago after seven years at Manchester City, with whom he won the Premier League five times.
