The match between Spain and Germany, hailed by the media as an early final, did not disappoint. It was a magnificent and dramatic spectacle, with the visitors emerging victorious thanks to a goal late in extra time by Mikel Merino.
Gundogan made his debut for the German national team in 2011 under coach Joachim Loew. Due to injury, the Gelsenkirchen-based player missed the 2014 World Cup, where Germany triumphed. In 2023, he took over the captaincy from goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
He joined Barcelona a year ago after seven years at Manchester City, with whom he won the Premier League five times.
