Iliana Yotova was forced to fight alone for “Smart Borders” in the EP –

/ world today news/ The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Internal Affairs of the EP organized a joint discussion with members of the national parliaments on the subject of the so-called “Smart Borders”.

The system will collect detailed personal and biometric data from third-country nationals entering the EU. It is expected to facilitate their passage and thus significantly relieve the border checkpoints from the kilometer-long queues that clog them at the beginning and end of each holiday season, while at the same time guaranteeing a high level of control of passing passengers. However, many have expressed doubts about the extent to which “Smart Borders” will prove to be a reliable and workable program whose data cannot be manipulated or misused.

The meeting was attended by line commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos and the EU Council, currently chaired by Latvia. Unfortunately, the Bulgarian National Assembly did not consider it necessary to send Bulgarian deputies to protect the national interest. Thus, Iliyana Yotova, presiding over the meeting, found herself in a delicate situation, being in a hall with 39 deputies from 20 countries, and none of them were Bulgarian.

If the proposal is accepted, it will lead to a significant change of the Schengen legislation, which is of particular importance for Bulgaria, which has been seeking for years to join the area of free movement of citizens. The lack of Bulgarian participation was somewhat compensated by the Romanian MPs, who raised the issue of Schengen and double standards in relation to Romania. They added that their country should be evaluated on objective and not on politically motivated criteria and that their country has proven its willingness to become a member of the Schengen area.

What measures are‍ being implemented to address privacy concerns associated with the “Smart Borders” initiative, and how will these measures ensure⁤ data security for individuals entering the EU?

As the website editor for world-today-news.com,⁣ I would like to conduct an interview with two guests about the ⁣recent developments‌ surrounding the “Smart Borders” initiative. Our first guest is Iliyana Yotova, a Bulgarian MEP who⁣ recently presided ⁢over a discussion on the matter. We also have Dimitris Avramopoulos, the European ⁣Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and‍ Citizenship, who‌ is spearheading the implementation of this program.

Section ⁤1: Overview of “Smart Borders”

Interviewer: Can you both provide an overview of the “Smart Borders” initiative ⁢and explain ‍what it entails?⁣ How will it impact the ⁣current border control system in the EU?

Guest‍ 1: Certainly. The “Smart Borders” initiative is designed to improve the EU’s external border control by introducing a system that collects detailed personal and biometric data from third-country nationals entering the EU. This⁣ data will be used to create a secure database to streamline the entry ‌process and⁤ reduce waiting times‍ at border checkpoints. It’s expected to be a win-win‌ situation for both travellers and EU member states.

Guest ⁣2: Yes, ⁣exactly. The idea is to make sure⁤ that‍ we have more efficient and effective border control while maintaining the ⁢free movement of people within the Schengen ⁢Area. We want to ensure that only legitimate ⁣travellers can‍ enter the EU, while also making the process as smooth and hassle-free as possible for those with no criminal intentions.

Section 2:⁣ Privacy Concerns

Interviewer: There have been concerns raised about the potential misuse of this data. How can we guarantee that the data collected through “Smart Borders” won’t be manipulated or abused?

Guest 1: We take privacy concerns very seriously, and we’ve put in place strict measures to safeguard the data collected. The data will be stored ‌securely and only authorized personnel will have access to it. Additionally, there are clear guidelines on how and when this data can be accessed.

Guest 2: We‌ understand ‍the privacy concerns, but I think it’s⁣ important to note that the data collected will be used for specific purposes – border control and security. We have no intention of using
