Iliana Yotova organizes a conference on “Refugee children in Bulgaria” –

/ world today news/ MEP Iliyana Yotova and the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists in the EP are organizing a conference on “Unaccompanied minors and minor refugees in the EU and Bulgaria – social challenges and necessary solutions”. The event will take place on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the “West” hall of the National Assembly.

The Bulgarian Parliament is the natural place for this discussion, because the challenges facing our country and the EU are getting bigger and bigger, especially when it comes to refugee children who have lost their parents. Legislative change is clearly needed. Therefore, international organizations, Bulgarian institutions and the non-governmental sector are engaged in the discussion to think about how to develop a truly working legislation.

Participation was confirmed by the Vice President of the Republic, Mrs. Margarita Popova, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labor and Social Policy, Mr. Ivaylo Kalfin, and the Minister of Education and Science, Professor Todor Tanev. The main foreign guest at the conference is Mrs. Kashetu Kienge, who prepares the position of the EP on the new pan-European and comprehensive migration policy. This is of great importance for Bulgaria, as Mrs. Kienge will be able to hear the problems of our country and take into account its interests in the report of the European Parliament. The directors of the two agencies that are most directly related to the problems of unaccompanied minors – the State Agency for Refugees and the State Agency for Child Protection – will be present at the discussion. Representatives of international organizations and the non-governmental sector, such as UNICEF, the EU Agency for Asylum Support (EASO), the International Organization for Migration, the Bulgarian Red Cross, etc., will also participate in the discussion.

“The data in recent months are really startling,” commented Iliana Yotova. “Only from the beginning of the year until September 1 of this year, the number of unaccompanied children who sought international protection in Bulgaria was over 1,100. The figure is growing more and more and we can hardly expect a decrease in the winter months. It is precisely these alarming trends that are among the reasons that led the Delegation of Bulgarian Socialists to the EP to initiate the conference. I want to hear all points of view in order to prepare the best possible Bulgarian and European legislation on the subject,” the Bulgarian MEP added.
