It would have been the biggest coming out in football history: longtime Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas announced via Twitter that he was gay. Hours later, however, Casillas made it clear that his account had been hacked.
“I hope you respect him: I’m gay”, reads the tweet posted on the Real legend’s account on Sunday afternoon. Even more mysterious was the response to the message of the former national team colleague Carles Puyol. He said, “Time to tell our story, Iker!” The message was garnished with a heart and a kiss emoji. After about an hour, Casillas’ tweet was deleted again.
To die Sports world initially speculated on a possible hacker attack on the former goalkeeper of the world and the Twitter accounts of the Barca legend. As the HOW reported, Casillas’ tweet should have been an ironic reaction to Spanish media reports of an alleged relationship.
Casillas himself then confirmed the version about two hours after his original tweet Sports world: “Account hacked”, he wrote in a tweet. “Fortunately, everything is fine now. I apologize to all my followers. And of course I apologize to the LGBT community.”
Puyol also apologized that same evening. His comment was just a joke: “I made a mistake. Sorry, it was a clumsy joke with no malicious intent that was completely out of place. I understand that I could have hurt feelings with it.” She also expressed her support for the LGBT community.
