IKEA will train 80 refugees and offer work experience | News

Furniture chain IKEA wants to train 80 refugees in Belgium. With a three-year program, the company aims to provide refugees with work experience and practical skills. Staff members can sign up as volunteers to guide the refugees.

The training program from ‘Working & Growing Together’ has the ambition to prepare at least 80 refugees in IKEA stores and services for the Belgian labor market. In this way they want to promote integration and improve the perception of refugees. The program is part of a global initiative at IKEA that provides first work experience for more than 2,500 refugees in more than 300 locations.

The campaign also has a commercial side. “We believe that if we can reflect the diversity of our local communities throughout our organization, we can better identify and respond to our customers’ needs,” says project leader Veerle Vandervondelen.

IKEA works with a range of specialized organizations for the pre-selection and recruitment of the candidates. As of this month, 27 refugees are already working: four in Zaventem, five in Ghent, four in Hasselt, nine in Mons and five in Anderlecht. In a next phase, which will be rolled out in 2021 and 2022, the other Belgian stores and services of IKEA will also receive refugees.
