As the company’s representative explains, the purchased second-hand furniture will be sold to Ikea, where it can be bought by someone who would benefit from it. She emphasizes that this is a pilot project, the aim of which is to find new ways to implement the principles of sustainable business in Latvia.

Ikea furniture will be available from November 12 to December 6. Within the framework of the new project, Latvian residents will be able to sell their Ikea furniture in exchange for an Ikea gift card, which can be used during the year to purchase something more useful to them. Depending on the condition of the furniture to be redeemed, you will be able to receive a gift card worth up to 40 percent of the original price of the product. Learn more about campaign rules here.

What you need to know to hand over unnecessary Ikea furniture:

  • the company must send photographs of the furniture by e-mail, after which the company’s employees will assess the product’s compliance with the campaign rules and offer a preliminary amount of compensation;
  • only “Ikea” furniture purchased in the store since the opening of “Ikea Latvija” can be applied for;
  • for security reasons, upholstered furniture is not considered for redemption;
  • the furniture approved in the project must be brought to the store in an assembled form, where safe, functional furniture will be specially marked and prepared for sale in the discounted goods department.

Inga Filipova, CEO of Ikea Latvija, explains that this initiative is one of the ways in which the company helps to make more sustainable choices on a daily basis with simple and accessible solutions. Representatives of the store emphasize that the future of the planet is in the hands of both companies and citizens.

“Ikea is committed to making a positive impact on people and the planet, and our goal is to create a better daily life while protecting the planet. The new short-term campaign or pilot project – Ikea Furniture Purchase – is a step towards this goal. Our research confirms that there are still a lot of work to be done in this area, but when buying new furniture, it is desirable to get rid of the previous ones in an environmentally friendly way.In general, people are happy to return, sell or repair redundant or worn-out things, “But it’s important that it’s easy and convenient to do. In this pilot project, we buy Ikea furniture to prepare it for sale and to give things a second life,” says Filipova.

She emphasizes that all the company’s products are made in accordance with Ikea’s democratic design principles, and that product sustainability is one of the five priorities; the other four are form, functionality, quality and low price. “Ikea’s commitment to the principles of the circular economy in the production of goods goes hand in hand with the use of waste in raw materials. More than 60% of Ikea’s products already use renewable materials, and the company plans to ensure that all products are made from renewable resources by 2030 or recyclable materials and that already at the production stage it is considered that the end – of – life goods can be used for other purposes, repaired, reused, sold or recycled, “reveals Filipova.

The company’s representative also reminds that since the opening of the Ikea Latvija store, buyers of new Ikea furniture that does not fit or fit in their home can use the return service. Other buyers can buy the goods thus recovered at a lower price, thus giving things a second life. In addition, the store has furniture spare parts available to shoppers to make the company’s furniture last longer at home, to buy new furniture less often and to save the planet’s resources as much as possible. In addition, it is also possible to improve the appearance of existing furniture by replacing worn parts or replacing covers or furniture facades.
