IKEA and Flow Loop create a revolutionary closed circuit shower!

The new closed-circuit shower system developed by IKEA and Flow Loop, a Danish start-up, reduces water consumption by 80% compared to traditional showers. So you can do good for your wallet as well as the planet! This project, if it is still under development, will soon complete the range offered by the Swedish giant to equip our bathroom. How does this system work? As soon as there are a few millimeters of water on the shower floor, the system turns on. The water used is recovered with a capacity of up to 12 liters per minute. It is filtered, purified and subjected to UV lighting, which eliminates 99.999% of bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms. Thus the system ensures that the water is clean for immediate reuse. In addition to this UV filter, the system has two additional layers of filtration which retain microparticles. This innovative system also incorporates IoT (Internet of Things) technology, which makes it possible to monitor water usage in real time and calculate the savings generated.

The collaboration between IKEA and Flow Loop began in 2020 with the aim of developing a water recycling system that could be installed in existing showers without the need for major renovation. The designers also promise to reduce energy consumption to 70% (that used for water heating) compared to conventional showers. This project is not only accessible to the general public, but also affordable, in line with IKEA’s philosophy. The brand has always sought to offer functional and economical design solutions for everyone. The system is already installed in 4,000 homes in Sweden and Denmark in the test phase.
