Ikauniece started in Gecisa after a long treatment of a leg injury and several surgeries, although she has not yet fully rehabilitated. Her goal in this competition was to meet the qualification standards for the world and European championships, which are 6420 and 6250 points, but such a result was not possible for a Latvian in Gecisa.
On Saturday, she finished 19th in the 100-meter hurdles with a score of 14.22 seconds (947 points), and was also in 19th place in the high jump with 1.71 meters, was ninth (774) in the shot with 13.70 meters, but finished in 200 meters. 25.00 seconds and reached the 16th best result (887).
In the long jump on Sunday, Ikauniece jumped 5.75 meters in her best attempt and was in the 20th position with 774 points, but in the javelin with a broadcast of 53.93 meters she was second (936) and rose from the 19th place to the 13th position.
In the final discipline – 800 meters – Ikauniece finished in two minutes in 18.33 seconds, which was the ninth result and gave 846 points. In the total amount of 6031 points, the Latvian athlete won the 13th place out of 23 multi-athletes who started in the competition.
Anuka Fetere celebrated the victory with a new Dutch record – 6693 points, the second with 6429 points was Adrianna Suleka from Poland and the third place with 6323 was taken by German Vanessa Grimm, who also corrected their personal records.
Ikauniece is a bronze medalist at the 2015 Beijing World Championships and a silver medalist at the 2012 European Championships.
In the men’s decathlon, the laurels of the victory were picked by the Canadian Damien Warner, who scored 8797 points. Second place went to Grenada athlete Lindon Victor, who earned 8,447 points, and third place winner Simon Ehammer, who had 8,377 points, set a new Swiss record. Estonian Maicels Uibo was seventh with 8067 points.
