IIHF’s Luc Tardif Addresses Admission of Russian and Belarusian Athletes to Competitions and Olympics

The admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to IIHF competitions depends on the possibility of safely organizing tournaments. This was stated by the head of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), Luc Tardif, at a press conference of the annual medal world junior championship at the Scandinavium in Gothenburg.

“Any inclusion of Russia and Belarus in IIHF competitions is entirely dependent on the safety of the athletes and organizers, as well as the IIHF’s ability to host a safe tournament,” transmits IIHF website words by Luc Tardif. He noted that the competition will be held in 2025 in Canada (Ottawa), in 2026 in the USA, and in 2027 again in Canada. The IIHF will consider the admission of Russians to the 2026 Olympics on February 12-13.

The IIHF Council suspended the national teams of Russia and Belarus from international tournaments for an indefinite period due to the situation in Ukraine at the end of February 2022. The 26th Winter Olympic Games will be held in the Italian cities of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo from February 6 to 22, 2026. It was previously known that the Russian national hockey team will play against the USA if admitted to the 2026 Olympics.
