San José, Sep 2 (EFE) .- The Green Climate Fund and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) signed an agreement this Thursday through which they will support climate adaptation and resilience initiatives in agriculture and rural areas in the countries of the Americas.
The document was signed within the framework of the 2021 Conference of Ministers of Agriculture of the Americas, which took place virtually for two days and concluded this Thursday, with IICA as the organizer.
IICA explained that with the accreditation granted by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) last July, the Institute will be able to compete for resources for the development of projects with a maximum value of 50 million dollars per initiative. .
“At the GCF we are pleased to welcome IICA as a new direct access entity. To date, the fund has allocated 1.85 billion dollars in 41 climate projects in Latin America and the Caribbean to take urgent mitigation and adaptation measures and strengthen their resilience to climate change. We anticipate that with this partnership with IICA we will increase financing ” said GCF deputy executive director Javier Manzanares.
The Director General of IICA, Manuel Otero, affirmed that supporting climate mitigation, adaptation and resilience projects is key for the institute, since “the current climate change context increases the vulnerability of food production systems and imposes great challenges for guarantee food safety “
“The relationship with the GCF signifies a structural change in IICA’s capacity to support and add value to the resilience agenda of our member states,” said Otero.
IICA explained that to date, it has approved and in the implementation stage two preparatory projects financed by the GCF that will benefit 17 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
One such initiative is aimed at climate adaptation of the agricultural sector in the Bahamas, Belize, Dominica, Haiti, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.
The other project seeks to support the post-pandemic green recovery of covid 19 in Ecuador, Brazil, Guatemala, Peru, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay and Bolivia.
IICA reported that increasing the sustainability of food production systems would lead to a better balance between carbon emission and its capture and would generate positive externalities for ecosystem services, which have yet to be quantified and capitalized.
