The II Binational Vaccination Day was held on April 22, 2023, in Puerto Asís, Putumayo – Colombia, as part of the Vaccination Week in the Americas campaign. The slogan for the event was “Vaccinating Saves Lives,” and it was attended by Gabriela Aguinaga, Vice Minister of Governance of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) of Ecuador. During the meeting, Aguinaga emphasized the importance of implementing vaccination strategies that prevent and save lives, and announced that Ecuador had reached a negotiation with Colombia to extend their vaccination brigades and cover all border points.
Jaime Urrego, Vice Minister of Public Health and Provision of Services of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Colombia, also highlighted the significance of this joint effort in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) Colombia and Ecuador to advance in the recovery, expansion, strengthening of vaccination coverage in both countries, particularly in the border areas.
The immunization day ensured a vaccination mechanism in a safe, effective, free, and barrier-free manner, providing an opportunity to start, complete, or reinforce schemes for Colombians and Ecuadorians who live in the border areas of both countries. Ecuador guarantees the well-being of the population through the vaccination scheme in all life cycles, offering 18 types of vaccines that protect against more than 26 diseases such as poliomyelitis, measles, rubella, chickenpox, fever yellow, hepatitis, rotavirus, and more, which are applied in all health establishments nationwide.
