Hello and welcome to this new episode of “Countries and Markets of the World”.
Today we are in the south of Australia, in Adelaide and I am at the central market which I will take you to visit. But just before, let’s go for a walk around. It is the summer season but that day the rainy weather forced us to take shelter.
Good surprise: in the Adelaide Hills, we discover the home and artist studio of Hans Heysen, one of Australia’s best-known painters who lived here until 1968.
Lover of natural light, Hans Heysen immortalized the large trees around and the landscapes of his region… The State of South Australia is also vineyards as far as the eye can see… The first vines were planted in the Barossa Valley, circa 1840.
Nearly two centuries later, wine production represents half that of the country and 80% of its top-end bottles, in particular the red wines made from the Syrah grape.
Many estates are open to the public to provide oenological details and offer tastings … in moderation of course!
Return to Adelaide market. Its history dates back to January 23, 1869 … At dawn, in a few hours, more than 500 people flocked to the products on sale. And from 6 a.m. there was already nothing left to buy!
