Ignoring Russian Criticism, UK Sends 14 Battle Tanks to Ukraine

Office of the Prime Minister (PM) English Rishi Sunak announced the delivery of 14 main battle tanks along with additional artillery support to Ukraine. The shipment was nevertheless made in London despite being heavily criticized by Russia.

As reported Reuters, Monday (16/1/2023), PM Sunak’s office announced that a squadron of 14 Challenger 2 tanks will arrive in Ukrainian territory in the coming weeks. About 30 AS90 self-propelled guns, operated by five shooters, will be sent to Kiev next.

The UK will also start training Ukrainian soldiers in using the tanks and weapons in the coming days.

“As Ukrainians approach their second year of living under the relentless Russian onslaught, the Prime Minister is dedicated to ensuring Ukraine wins this war,” a spokesman for Sunak’s office said in a statement.

“Together with his closest military advisers, he has analyzed the military picture, looked at the strategic impact of British support and identified windows where he thinks the UK and its allies can have maximum impact,” the statement added.

The announcement was made following a telephone conversation with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday (14/1) local time, where Sunak “outlined UK ambitions to intensify support to Ukraine, including through the provision of Challenger 2 tanks and additional artillery systems”.

Last week, Sunak’s office said Britain would coordinate its support with its allies, after Germany, France and the United States both indicated they would supply Ukraine with armored vehicles.
