The Second Vice Presidency of the Government, which leads Pablo Iglesias, has appealed to the Community of Madrid to request “urgently” generators to the Ministry of Defense, thus allowing electricity to be supplied to the families of the Cañada Real that are without electricity during the snowfall that took place this Monday.
Specifically, it demands the Madrid president, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, that requests the deployment of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) to supply this equipment to the people affected by the cuts that electricity.
After several days of conversations with the Government delegate in Madrid, Jose Manuel Franco, and with the Ministry of the Interior, from the Vice Presidency of Social Rights and Agenda 2030 it has been concluded that this is the “the only way to prevent the inhabitants of La Cañada from going through this historic cold wave without electricity supply“.
For the necessary intervention of the Ministry of Defense, that would be carried out through the UME, it is necessary that the regional government that heads Isabel Diaz Ayuso formally request it, sources from the department headed by Iglesias have explained. For this reason and before the imminent arrival of more snowfall, from the Second Vice-presidency the Madrid leaders are urged “don’t wait another minute“.
The families of Cañada Real affected by the power outages gathered this Monday at the headquarters of the Naturgy company to demand that electricity be supplied for more than 4,000 people who have been without electricity for three months.
All this after reporting the cuts in Sector 5 to the Madrid Prosecutor’s Office. The Court of Instruction number 42 of Madrid has opened preliminary proceedings for the complaint also filed by affected families of Sector 6 of the Cañada Real, also affected by power outages.
For its part, the Madrid Executive insisted this Thursday that the power cuts are related with illegal marijuana crops and has demanded “forcefulness” against people who carry out this criminal behavior. Specifically, the Minister of Justice, Interior and Victims, Enrique Lopez, has indicated that the blackout in La Cañada occurs “as a consequence of alleged illegal drug plantations”, which has led to an overexploitation of the electricity grid.
A position already expressed by the regional president, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, on December 10 when he assured that the power outages are a consequence of the overload caused by the cultivation of marijuana carried out by the mafias. “To have the Porsches parked there, fine; to pay the bills, which is what is causing those cuts, no,” he said then.
Criticisms of the opposition
The situation of power outages in Cañada Real has generated many criticisms from opposition groups in the region. Along these lines, the PSOE spokesman in the Madrid Assembly, Ángel Gabilondo, announced that he will denounce the Pact on the Cañada Real Galiana, approved years ago by all political groups, if the Community did not agree with Naturgy within 24 hours the restoration of the electricity supply in the houses of the old cattle route.
Naturgy precisely insisted this Thursday that is not responsible for power outages suffered for three months the residents of the Cañada Real Galiana, cuts attributed to overloads greater than 70 percent, while offering for a meeting with the political leaders and thus deploying an urgent intervention to solve the problem.
The spokesperson for Más Madrid, Rita Maestre, requested the intervention of the Government of Spain if the Consistory and the Community of Madrid “they keep looking the other way” and they do not solve the problem that is causing the lack of electricity supply. In turn, the spokesperson for United We Can, Isa Serra, claimed in the Assembly that the Pact for the Cañada is “very clear” and states that the Madrid Executive is the one who has to “guarantee supplies.”
