There is a goal that Ighli Vannucchi just can’t forget: the one whose time is up with the Vicenza in May 1998 which was a defibrillator stroke for the hopes of the first historic salvation in Serie A from the Salernitana. «But I’m not the only one who can’t get that play out of his head: come on Facebook a fan wrote to me that after that goal he chose to name his dog Yghli. He got the initial wrong but I forgive him.” Vannucchi loses his smile, his distinctive trait, for a few seconds when he remembers that season finale: «There I became one with the square. It was a general ecstasy. We hoped there would be a happy ending, but instead the epilogue in Piacenza with the tragedy of the four boys was a very hard blow».
At forty-seven he decided to say enough to playing football, saying goodbye to Pieve San Paolo, a team with which he also won a Third Category championship with his son Niccolò. Then the decision to hang up the shoes…
There is a moment when you grow up: that fateful moment has arrived (smiles, ed.). But last year’s success was truly exciting, we wanted to finish on a high note in a group made up of grim teams apart from the category. It was like putting a cherry on a beautiful cake.

And I feel like saying that the team is in safe hands. I had him at Empoli in Mister Campilongo’s technical staff. We are talking about a very well-prepared person who has demonstrated that he has clear ideas. I wish him not only to be able to do well but to write a page of history with this club.
