Iga Świątek’s game in the US Open was interrupted and postponed. Many missed opportunities. The Polish woman is losing

Yesterday Iga Świątek waited to start her match. It was planned for court No. 11, but there, two long men’s meetings forced the organizers to look for another place for him. Unfortunately – at least for now – it is not happy for Igo.

Turns and obstacles

In a duel with a short, only 163 cm tall 25-year-old African-American Vickery, she had plenty of opportunities and possibilities to close the first game. Unfortunately, she did not use any of them. The match, in long fragments, was dictated by the Polish woman, but on the way to victory unexpectedly new turns and obstacles appeared. The second gem, which lasted over 10 minutes (Iga then made up for the losses and broke the US representative), heralded huge emotions. And at least in the first set they did appear. Unfortunately, from our point of view, no happy ending.

Iga presented herself in combat, finished a lot of balls from the end line, but it seemed that the player from Florida adapted quite well to the style of the Wimbledon youth champion. Although she watched many balls away, from time to time she was able to show that she was “alive” and successfully counter. Despite the fact that her range is limited due to physical conditions, even though she does not run as lightly as hers in terms of the growth of the Japanese woman, she read the plans of Swiatek quite well and set her tough conditions. She also played from a completely different level than in the first round by Weronika Kudiermietowa. Iga had to work.

And when you work, mistakes sometimes appear. In the editorial office, there are typos or other imperfections, cars on the court and hitting the net. And these began to appear at key moments. At one point in bursts, which resulted in unused set balls and that the opponent managed to lead to a tie-break. Concentrated Iga seemed to be three times better than her opponent, but when focus and precision escaped, problems began.

A fairy tale that turned into a horror movie

Their culmination was in the tie-break. The beginning was like a fairy tale – super hits and an advantage growing to the level of 5–0. This part of the meeting, it seemed, could not be lost. At least none of us imagined it. Unfortunately, then the trend changed and the “waterfall” began. Sachia started playing more actively because she had nothing to lose. But it was obvious in this situation. Iga, however, got lost and gave point after point unnecessarily. She shoved a massive backhand into the tape, then tried a shortcut from far behind the finishing line. He was not on the other side of the court. Rywalka began to get closer, the pressure grew more and more, and in the end, unfortunately, she outgrown the Pole. Vickery scored seven consecutive points and won the tie-break. You could say that the “nightmare” from Miami has returned. There, in the match with Vickery, she was leading in the first set 5: 1, in the second set 3: 1, and both of these games and the whole lost 6: 7 (2), 4: 6. These demons – and this is the task for the next day – must finally be chased away …

Why only for the next one, more on that in a second. Iga took a toilet break and the judge returned to the court with her. She whispered two words to the referee, and the referee informed that Swiatek was receiving a warning for inappropriate behavior. You didn’t know what it was about, but you could guess it was related to the outcome and the incident that took place behind the scenes, in a zone out of our eyes.

Swiatek returned to the court, managed to flip the racket twice and finished the balls in a beautiful style when it started to rain. Initially light, but the forecast for the evening was terrible and the match was quickly stopped. The organizers decided not to finish it on Thursday. The tennis players will return to play on Friday. We hope that Iga will sleep well with this task and will lead everything to a happy end on Friday. After all, this match is still absolutely winnable!
