Last week Iga Świątek turned out to be the best in the Indian Wells tournament. Thanks to this, the Polish woman gained a lot of points in the WTA ranking. It was very important, because a few days ago the current leader of this ranking, Ashleigh Barty, announced her retirement. Thus, Świątek, winning the second round in Miami with Viktorija Golubic, secured the first position in the ranking from Monday, March 4.

In the third round, the Polish rival was Madison Brengle, who was in the 59th place. In Indian Wells, she was eliminated in the first round. In Miami, however, she was doing much better. First, she beat Alexandra Eala, and then Ludmila Samsonowa.

Both players have played with each other twice in their careers. In Charleston in 2018, the American turned out to be better, winning 6: 1, 6: 1. In 2021, during the competition in Adelaide, the Polish woman played a part, winning 6: 3, 6: 4.

The meeting in Miami started perfectly for Iga Świątek. The Polish woman first won her own pass, then used the third break point and was leading 2: 0. The Polish woman followed the blow and won more games, breaking her rival once again. First it was 4-0, then Świątek kept the pass, and in the sixth game she finished the set, winning 6-0 in 25 minutes.

It wasn’t that easy in the second game. The Polish woman first kept the application, but then Brengle finally won the game at the service. In the next two games, the situation was similar, and in the fifth game the American had a chance to break Christmas and took advantage of it, taking the lead 3: 2.

The irritated Polish woman replied immediately, not letting her rival score even a point on her service. After a while, she returned to the lead, and at the opponent’s service she used the third break point and it was already 5: 3. Świątek already controlled the course of the match, but did not use the first match ball. However, she did it on the second occasion and won the set 6: 3.

In the fourth round, Iga Świątek will face Cori Gauff, who is seeded number 14 in Miami. This match will take place on Monday evening, Polish time. The match is scheduled to start around 9 p.m.
