IG Metall boss threatens to expand the industrial action

Bremen (dpa) – In the stagnant collective bargaining round for the metal and electrical industry in the north, IG Metall threatens to expand the labor dispute. “If there is no result by Easter, we will compete harder,” said Federal Chairman Jörg Hofmann on Tuesday at a rally in front of the Airbus plant in Bremen. According to IG Metall, around 1,100 employees took part in the warning strike.

In the tariff district of the coast, which stretches from the north of Lower Saxony to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the fifth round of negotiations is due next Thursday. It is the fourth round in the Lower Saxony tariff district. After so many rounds, “something should be visible on the table”, said Hofmann. He called the employers’ previous proposals not an offer, but a provocation.

Due to the corona crisis, employers have so far rejected higher wages this year. As in North Rhine-Westphalia, you proposed a mix of a one-time payment and an increase in the table from 2022. In contrast, IG Metall is calling for a package with four percent more wages plus measures to secure jobs and locations. “Inflation knows no standstill despite Corona,” said Hofmann. Therefore, the colleagues would need an allowance. “Four percent – that is a moderate requirement in a difficult time,” he said.
