Ifo President Fuest calls for a broader assessment of the corona pandemic

ifo boss Clemens Fuest (Imago / IPON) Dealing with the crisis should not be left to the parties on the right and left, said Fuest on Deutschlandfunk. It is clear that the pandemic has left deep marks – this also applies to the world of work. This becomes particularly clear in things like home offices and the role of digitalization. This would have created new advantages and opportunities for many employees and companies, especially with regard to flexibility.

However, negative effects of the pandemic are still noticeable. During the Corona crisis, bankruptcies were suspended or at least significantly reduced through legal measures. Now there is a certain catch-up effect. In principle, there are currently a number of economic problems that are not primarily due to the pandemic, emphasized Fuest.

With regard to the Corona aid, the economist said that it was often not very targeted. On the one hand, there were companies that were overcompensated. On the other hand, others also fell completely through the cracks, for example in the case of new start-ups.
