IFK Gothenburg’s crisis is growing ever deeper. Varberg went away to a 2-0 lead, and despite a late penalty reduction by Gustaf Norlin, Blåvitt conceded another loss. Now the club remains in relegation place in the Allsvenskan, on the same number of points as the old man Varberg.
After the press conference, IFK Gothenburg’s communications manager Marcus Modéer announced that Blåvitt supporters asked to speak to players outside Gamla Ullevi, which the entire squad chose to accommodate. The media, in turn, were asked not to attend or follow the meeting outside the arena.
Blåvitt star Marcus Berg talks about the meeting.
– We had a meeting with our fans. There were three people who had to plead for them, and it was straight and clear from their side. They agreed with what they said, that we must rise. They are there for us 24/7, and we have to step up and get the points we need. Right now we are in the shit, he says and continues:
– It was calm, but straight and clear. I think everyone understands the seriousness of this situation. It was a clear and straightforward meeting.
IFK club director Håkan Mild was also at the meeting.
– It was very calm, I must say. I’ve been around for a while, and it was very calm and controlled. There were three people who spoke for the fans. There were quite a few out there, but there were three who brought the case in a controlled and calm manner, he says and continues:
– They were dissatisfied with the performance, the year and today’s performance. It was still a dialogue, about wanting to do it together. There are many who put in a lot of time and effort, so it is clear that there is disappointment. You can have an understanding of that, but at the same time I’ve been involved for so long, so it was calm and controlled.
When asked what the supporters’ message was, Mild’s response is:
– You always want to “show more heart” in situations like this, and those bits. But there was no gaping and shouting or anything like that, says Mild.
Berg further believes that it is currently difficult.
– It was an incredibly heavy loss, there are absolutely a lot of emotions. Right now it’s very heavy.
The answer to the question of what was wrong with Varberg is:
– I don’t think we created a scoring chance during 90 minutes against Varberg. It’s way, way too bad. I don’t even remember what their 1-0 was like, and then they made it 2-0 in the 90 plus. It is under all criticism. We talk a lot about getting into the right spaces, and I don’t think we did that once in the first half. It is difficult to analyze like this after a match, says the forward.
IFK Göteborg will face IF Elfsborg away from home in the Allsvenskan on Sunday.
