In my view, this is just a very large middle finger for the customer.
…
Indeed it is, plus a monopoly in disguise. Since you must use original parts and link serial numbers, exclude other parts.
In the long past there was arguing with cars whether or not your car was repaired at the official garage. Ultimately, manufacturers are obligated to provide workshop manuals, and the (legal) warranty does not expire if you do not perform maintenance at an official (branded) workshop (and rightfully so).
The reason is this principle:
If you assume that a manufacturer is only suitable to perform a repair on their own, you create some kind of monopoly and avoid competition, so there is no incentive to work less or better.
Ultimately, you want what the manufacturer does to be in the interest / benefit of the customer. In a company, a customer, a person, is a superior good to a commercial organization. Do not forget that. Also, you don’t want drugs to become unrealistically expensive, because the profit.
And you see Apple stepping on it over and over again.
IPhones cannot be expanded with SD cards. Not a problem in itself, unless it turns out that the additional internal memory is 5 ~ 10 times more expensive than SD cards. And speed is no excuse, as NVME SSDs are accordingly no more expensive.
Apple stuck to the lightning connector. Not only that, they also made the connector smaller a long time ago, so many people needed new (expensive) cables again.
Omission of 3.5mm connection: leads to extra sales of wireless headphones.
And now this. Another development that leads to extra expense for customers, but which is difficult to defend. And these things don’t go on for one or two years, but five to ten years.
It’s a real shame, because Apple makes very nice products. Apple’s update policy is also normally organized unlike Android. But practices like this keep me away from Apple. I don’t want to be scammed, not directly, indirectly or in a shady way.
It’s like peeing in your pants when it’s cold. And after all these years, the smell can no longer be masked …
