iFixit Disassembles the New MacBook Pro: Inside Look at Space Black Finish

However, the fact that Apple achieved the shade of Space Black is interesting

The arrival of new devices is often accompanied by improved specifications or a redesigned design. In the case of the new MacBook Pros with M3 processors, not much has changed at first glance, but appearances are often deceiving. Sometimes the important changes take place so-called under the hood, while they are not visible to the naked eye. Since then, however, there are YouTube channels such as iFixit, which take apart new devices down to the last screw and reveal all their secrets.

Why is Space Black darker than its predecessors?

Even the new MacBook Pros did not escape disassembly, which you can watch in the video below. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the fact that the internal distribution of components has practically not changed compared to the previous year, which is not very common. Technology companies, including Apple, often try to change the internal layout at least a little and make it more efficient, but it was probably not necessary for the new models. That’s why iFixit focused more on another aspect that is much more visible – a new color called Space Black.

iFixit has shared information in a blog post detailing how Apple allegedly achieved the new, darker Space Black finish on the MacBook Pro. In short, Apple managed to make the Space Black anodized surface “less uniform” on a microscopic level, which results in more light being reflected off it and giving it a darker impression.

“Apple discovered that it could etch an already rough anodized surface, making it rougher,” written by Kevin O’Reilly of iFixit. “The resulting nooks and crannies further scatter the incident light rays and send them in more directions. Thus, less white light reaches our eyes – the result is a matte surface,” he added.

The new matte color is not so prone to fingerprints, so there is no need to polish the lid of the MacBook Pro as often. The previous generation suffered from visible fingerprints, so Apple managed to eliminate one of the fundamental aesthetic ailments. Although this may seem like a small thing, in normal use it is a noticeable improvement in the user experience.
