If your little one has a stuffy nose, try these 7 tips

Jakarta: Children, especially babies, are prone to colds, coughs and flu. In some cases, this can cause nasal congestion. When too much moisture causes the tissues and blood vessels in the nose to swell and because babies’ nasal passages are very small, they are more susceptible to it. Even small amounts of air, breast milk, or mucus can trigger it.

So to overcome this, Dr Santosh Kumar, Consultant Pediatrician and Neonatologist, Mother’s Hospital, Banashankari, Bengaluru, shares some tips as quoted from HealthShots below:

Causes of nasal congestion

There are many reasons why a baby may have a stuffy nose. Baby’s chest can be tight because of breathing unhealthy air, smoke, exposure to viruses, pollutants, and other irritants. Their bodies produce extra mucus in their noses to trap them.

Other factors such as dry hair and other adverse weather conditions can trigger mucus production. The following are signs that a baby’s nose is blocked, including:

– Noisy breathing

– Snoring while sleeping

– Their noses are blocked

– Hard to eat (no appetite)

– sobbed

– Cough

– Have a cold

How to clear a stuffy nose

1. Bathe the baby with warm water, which has been proven to help with nasal congestion.

2. Check feeding or breastfeeding regularly and change wet diapers in time.

3. Use a few drops of salt water to remove the blockage.

4. Make sure the area around the baby is dry. You can use a humidifier or humidifier to keep the air around you moist, clean and breathable.

5. Massaging the bridge of the nose, forehead and cheekbones can reduce discomfort due to chest tightness.

6. Make sure to remove all kinds of smoke, pollutants and allergens from the environment as they can cause the baby to breathe bad air or irritation.

7. Steam sessions can help them breathe better.

Nasal congestion in babies is generally temporary. However, immediately consult your little one to the doctor if he is less than three months old if it makes it difficult for him to breathe or suckle. Likewise, if a stuffy nose is accompanied by fever, lethargy, and a cough that doesn’t go away even after applying the various methods above, immediately visit a doctor.
