Dr. Mohamed Wagih, a gastroenterology and liver consultant at Assiut College of Medicine, said that there are some people who resort to taking laxatives when they suffer from diabetes. Constipation For several days, there is no harm in it, but excessive and frequent use and the body getting used to eating it are among the things that cause a person to be exposed to many health problems.
The gastroenterology consultant added that excessive consumption of laxatives causes the digestive system to be exposed to excessive gas, diarrhea, lack of comfort, and exposure to colon disorders.
Wajih also pointed out that excessive consumption of laxatives is one of the things that causes dehydration, because if they are taken in excess, the person is exposed to diarrhea, which exposes the person to severe dehydration as a result of the body losing all the nutrients and water inside the body, and the person begins to suffer from many symptoms, including the inability to Urination, dizziness, thirst, and frequent collapse.
He explained that too many laxatives also cause the body to lose many different nutrients, such as potassium, sodium, and calcium. When the body loses these important nutrients, it is exposed to an increase in heart rate and a decrease in blood pressure.
Finally, the gastroenterology consultant confirmed that excessive consumption of laxatives increases the risk of urinary tract infections, due to the concentration of chemicals in the urine, which causes irritation of the urethra, and the person becomes more susceptible to bacterial infections.
Wajih advised people who suffer from constipation not to overuse laxatives and to replace them with natural tricks, such as eating prunes with milk, and green salad is considered a treasure in maintaining the health of the digestive system and reducing the incidence of constipation, and eating foods rich in fiber.
