Studies have shown that sleeping with the lights on at night increases your risk of developing heart disease and diabetes. It is explained that if the light is turned on even if the brightness is not counted, the ability to control blood glucose decreases, increasing the possibility of suffering from heart disease and diabetes.

A joint research team including Northwestern University and Harvard Medical School conducted an experiment on 20 men and women between the ages of 18 and 40. Participants were divided into two groups and asked to sleep in low light conditions (less than 3 ㏓ (lux)) and medium brightness (100 to 240 ㏓). 1 ㏓ is the brightness of a candle at a distance of 1 m.

As a result, the group that slept with the 100-240 ㏓ lights on had an increase in heart rate as the sympathetic nervous system was stimulated during sleep. Furthermore, insulin resistance increased by 15% compared to before the experiment. On the other hand, in the dim light group, insulin resistance decreased by 4%.

The research team said: “Increased insulin resistance plays an important role in the development of diabetes. She advised, “Turn off the TV before bed, and wear an eye patch if it’s hard to avoid the light.”
