Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –
Airlangga University epidemiologist Windhu Purnomo estimates that the Covid-19 pandemic will only be completed at least in mid-2022 when herd immunity is achieved by relying solely on Corona Virus vaccination.
The condition is that vaccinations are given to 15 million people or 30 doses of vaccine per month and without any rejection from the residents.
“So if we just rely on solving the pandemic from vaccines, it can only be finished in mid-2022, and don’t let that happen,” said Windhu when contacted. CNNIndonesia.com, Thursday (17/12).
Previously, the government targeted to inject the vaccine into 67-70 percent of the population or about 182 million people to achieve community immunity or herd immunity. Indonesia itself began bringing in 1.2 million doses of the Sinovac brand of Corona vaccine, China, some time ago.
This prediction cannot be separated from Windhu’s assessment of the government’s ability to vaccinate Corona, which is a maximum of 15 million per month.
“My estimate is that we can only give the vaccine every month a maximum of about 15 million or 30 million doses. That is, if we can get it, there will be a lot. If it’s like that, then we don’t just rely on one or two vaccine producers,” he explained.
If the vaccination target per month is met, Windhu said herd immunity can materialize in less than a year.
“If the government wants to do that, then the target is like that herd immunity can at least implemented a year or two in the next year. Yes, 2022 is yes, “he said.
“It also seems difficult because there are groups of people who don’t want to be vaccinated,” he added.

Because of that Windhu asked the government to disseminate information to the public as early as possible which was also strengthened by evidence of the halalness and safety of vaccines so that the public was more confident.
“Public communication is rather difficult to do, if the fact is that this vaccine is safe, effective, good immunogenicity, halal, does not contain heavy metals. We must have evidence first,” he explained.
In addition, Windhu asked the government to start communicating with as many vaccine producers in other countries as possible. The condition is that the vaccine candidate must have a high level of efficacy, namely 90 percent.
However, the lecturer at the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Airlangga still emphasizes efforts to prevent the Covid-19 case through tests, tracing, and follow-up (3T) and wearing masks, washing hands, and maintaining distance (3M).
“3M and 3T are important, if the pandemic is not run it will never be finished, it’s useless we have spent a lot of money,” he explained.
