It was a failure when it was released, but this project from the late ’90s has many things in common with the Netflix saga directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia
Science fiction has returned to Netflix to sweep. Hole 2 has followed in the footsteps of its predecessor and has become one of the most popular films on the streaming platform of the great Jan.
The new installment of the Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia saga stars Milena Smit and Hovik Keuchkerian and, according to FlixPatrol, the sequel is sweeping in more than 90 countries: it is in the Top 10 most popular films on Netflix. Of course, The Hole achieved a very difficult milestone: being one of the most viewed non-English speaking films in the history of the platform.
If, like so many people, you have already seen Hole 2 and liked it, you cannot miss another science fiction title that has some points in common with Gaztelu-Urrutia’s film. We always forget that it exists, but this 1997 title is one of the best of the genre. This is Cube, a film directed by Vincenzo Natali that has become a cult film. Cube is available on Movistar Plus+.
This low-budget science fiction film revolutionized the brains of an entire generation: you can watch it for free on streaming
A GROUP OF STRANGERS IN A MYSTERIOUS PRISON

Yes The hole is set in a vertical prison through which, every day, a platform full of food descends through the center; Cube takes place in a strange installation of cube-shaped cells connected to each other. Each one of them holds a mysterious torture and you have to use mathematics to know which one to enter and which one not to enter. The protagonists are a group of people who do not know each other but must survive this strange confinement.
Cube is a low-budget film – it cost about 365,000 Canadian dollars – shot in 21 days. In Canada, its country of origin, it was a commercial failure. It did not have the same bad luck in France, as it became one of the most popular titles in the country.
Of course, Cube’s story did not stop there, a sequel was made in 2022. Hypercube: Cube 2 featured Andrzej Sekula behind the cameras and received poor reviews. In 2004, a prequel directed by Ernie Barbarash and titled Cube Zero hit theaters, which, unlike the second installment, was better received by critics. In any case, neither Hypercube: Cube 2 nor Cube Zero have managed to transcend as the original film did.
