Memory loss, reduced speed of thought and difficulty in performing daily tasks are some of the symptoms of dementia, which is related to the ongoing decline of the brain.
An estimated one million Britons are currently living with dementia, a number expected to rise in the coming years due to an aging population.
However, it is estimated that there are lesser-known signs of dementia that could be indications of it. Dr. Ahmad Khundakar, a lecturer in biomedical science at Teesside University spoke to the Express about this unusual symptom that anyone experiencing would do well to see a doctor.
What causes dysphagia?
«Dysphagia or difficulty swallowing is an unusual physical sign of dementia. It occurs due to damage to areas of the brain responsible for movement and coordination, including those that control the swallowing reflex. Swallowing difficulties can lead to weight loss, malnutrition and dehydration” says.
“If someone develops symptoms of dysphagia, it is vital to seek medical help immediately,” says the doctor. He continues: “Dysphagia can lead to serious complications, such as malnutrition or drowning, if not treated properly. Health professionals, such as speech therapists, can assess the underlying cause and provide interventions to improve swallowing function.”
