Whenever we are faced with the choice of buying a car, there are many doubts that arise before making the purchase. But perhaps the biggest one is related to the actual quality of the product we are spending money on, which for a machine is usually not even a little.
Being aware of the most resistant models from a mechanical point of view and which maintain efficiency even after years of purchase, could save us a lot of money in the long term, since we will avoid a whole series of costs linked to continuous visits to the trusted mechanic.
In fact, the expenses related to repairs after those for fuel are the most expensive for all motorists. From an analysis carried out by CarGarantie (an insurance company), in 2019 there was a substantial increase in the amounts paid by motorists to mechanics, compared to the previous year. We are talking about increases that amounted to around 5% with consumers who saw their annual expense for repairs rise from 527 euros to 551, with 24 euros more than in 2018.
The component most affected by damage of various kinds is the engine. After those to the engine, the most expensive repairs are those that are made on the fuel system, on the transmission, on the electrical system and finally on the air conditioning system. But there are some categories and models of cars that are more susceptible than others to damage of all kinds, let’s see them together.
Which are the models that fail the most?
The survey conducted by ADAC, Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club, on 132 car models belonging to 22 different brands, analyzed which of these cars were the most reliable, in the period from 2012 to 2019, and on the other hand also the less reliable ones. The final ranking showed that there are even models (46) that are extremely solid in terms of mechanics, but only 5 that on the contrary have suffered numerous damages during the period considered.
Research from the German automobile club has compiled a very detailed breakdown statistics analysis, which can be consulted online at any time on their association site, with all model series being evaluated, sorted alphabetically and broken down by vehicle classes. A real convenience for those who are thinking of making a purchase. But what were the least reliable models?
We find for the period from 2015 to 2017 models such as the Opel Insigna between, the Seat Alhambra from 2014 to 2016, the Vw Sharan from 2012 to 2015, the first Hyundai i20 from 2012 to 2014 and the Renault Clio in 2014 and 2015, the Kia Ceed, the Ford S Max and the Peugeot 308 of 2012, Toyota Scenic and Renault Megane in 2017, Smart Four Four in 2015 and 2016. For 2019, the most recent year of the analysis, the highest incidence of breakdowns was recorded on the models of Toyota Corolla, Toyota CHR , Ford Transit and Opel Insigna.
