The WHO and other organizations warn that some patients may be more affected or present more complications than others when they get the new coronavirus.
While the World Health Organization (WHO) says it is still in the process of understanding how it affects covid-19 to people, he warns that in some patients may have greater consequences than others: the elderly and those who suffer from certain diseases.
Among the pathologies that aggravate the situation of the covid-19 patient, the following stand out:
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- Lung diseases
- Cancer
- Diabetes
The outbreak started in Wuhan, China in December 2019 and has spread worldwide, leaving tens of thousands of infected and thousands of deaths.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also maintain that the first information from the place of origin of the epidemic “shows that some people have a higher risk of becoming very ill from the coronavirus.”

An analysis of the first 99 coronavirus patients in Wuhan, China, published in late January in the medical journal The Lancet, indicates that most of them had other diseases that may have made them more vulnerable to the virus as a “result of their weaker immune functions”:
- 40 had a weakened heart or damaged blood vessels due to conditions such as heart disease, heart failure, and stroke.
- Another 12 patients had diabetes.

Cardiac conditions
The American Heart Association explains that the moment the lungs are affected by the coronavirus, a previously ill heart has to work harder to pump oxygenated blood throughout the body.
A study published in March in the journal Springer Nature, Over 150 coronavirus patients in Wuhan say that “cardiovascular disease cases have a significantly increased risk of death when contracting the coronavirus.”

However, the American College of Cardiology says the specific effects of covid-19 on the cardiovascular system are still unclear.
Although it acknowledges that “there have been reports of acute cardiac injury, arrhythmias, hypotension, tachycardia and a high proportion of simultaneous cardiovascular disease in infected individuals, particularly those requiring more intensive care,” says the organization.
This entity recommends that people with cardiovascular diseases be vaccinated against other respiratory infections to avoid contracting some at the same time as the coronavirus.
Asthma
Some experts also argue that respiratory infections, such as the coronavirus, can trigger asthma symptoms.
Asthma UK advises those who are concerned about the virus to take a number of steps to control their asthma.
These include applying the prescribed dose of the preventive inhaler daily, to help reduce the risk of an asthma attack caused by any respiratory virus, including the coronavirus.
Cancer
Cancer treatments often weaken patients’ immune systems, even for a long time after they are gone.
The American Cancer Society quotes doctors who recommend these patients be “Extracuous” to avoid becoming infected with the coronavirus.
