The two thousand lire represents a sort of “anomaly” in the long history of the Italian lira, in over a century and a half of life: the historic Italian currency, which became out of circulation almost twenty years ago, was in fact developed in numerous denominations, both in banknotes and in coins, which over the decades have seen the birth of various formats.

The two thousand lire banknote, on the other hand, was “inaugurated” only in the 1970s, first in the variant with Galileo Galilei, a version later replaced by the more famous one, bearing the face of Guglielmo Marconi.

Two thousand lire Galileo Galilei

Printed over a period of ten years, that is from 1973 to 1983, it presents on the front the face of Galileo Galilei, a historian astronomer as well as one of the figures who contributed to the development of modern science: next to his portrait are depicted two historic buildings of Pisa (birthplace of Galileo), that is the Tower and the Duomo present in the Tuscan city, on the back there is the dome of the Amici telescope.

How much are they worth today?

How much are the copies of this banknote worth today? It is important to observe the serial number, present on the lower part of the banknote, to understand the series and therefore the degree of rarity of the banknote. The first series are recognizable by the wording AA at the beginning and another A at the end: a banknote in Fior di Stampa condition of this type is worth up to 180 euros, an evaluation that decreases with the worsening of the conditions to be worth a few tens of EUR.

The most interesting and rare are however those that are part of the replacement series, that is those created specifically to take the place of worn banknotes: these are recognizable by the serials starting with XA, those ending with the letter A exceed 300 euros. value if in condition Fior di Stampa, those ending with B have an even higher value and are worth up to 750 euros, something less for banknotes ending with C. The XAs ending with D do not exceed 40 euros in value.

Any other serial is worth a copy between 10 and 25 euros.
