If they do not accelerate the vaccination in three days, thousands of doses will be discarded

In the country there are more than 500,000 doses that will be discarded if they are not applied in the next three days, since they expire on October 31, as announced by the national health authorities.

These AstraZeneca vaccines, which are applied as a third dose, arrived in different batches to the country as a donation.

The Deputy Minister of Health Management and the Sanitary System, Álvaro Terrazas, confirmed this Tuesday that there were still 600,000 AstraZeneca vaccines in the country, which are about to expire this end of the month.

Of the 800,000 that were available for the third dose, until this Wednesday 240,875 were placed; yesterday was one of the days with the most doses applied, with 28,647 throughout the country.

Along these lines, the Ministry of Health and Sports confirmed that the third dose will no longer be applied in the country as of November 1, and the remaining AstraZeneca vaccines must be discarded at each health facility, according to the protocol.

For this day a meeting is scheduled between the Ministry of Health and the departmental authorities, where they will analyze strategies in the face of a fourth wave and part of the agenda will be focused on how to accelerate the immunization of the population.

Among the strategies that are now being applied to boost vaccination coverage, especially with the third dose, is the provision of positions with extended hours, that is, they work between late and night.

In addition, according to Terrazas, door-to-door vaccination is still being promoted in some regions.

In Santa Cruz

Three days after the expiration of the AstraZeneca vaccines that are used as third doses, still in the department of Santa Cruz there are about 120,000 doses.

The departmental secretary for Human Development, Fernando Pacheco, remarked this Wednesday that about 60,000 third doses have already been applied, but the application of the booster started with more than 180,000 AstraZeneca vaccines, so that around 120,000 remain unused.

“We are doing all the necessary measures to apply the largest number of vaccines, going out to find people. Hopefully we will give it the best use and optimization ”, insisted Pacheco.

One of the measures to expand coverage was the setting up of night vaccination points. The Minister of Health, Jeyson Auza, inaugurated three points in the Santa Cruz capital (in the old Los Pozos, in the offices of the COD and in the Simón Bolívar neighborhood of the Tres Mil Plan), which are open from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. . The Headquarters is analyzing enabling two more on a similar schedule.

The executive secretary of the COD, Rolando Borda, explained that although they seek to avoid losing the doses, they also want to encourage immunization, because the end of the year parties and Carnival are coming.

Entry to fourth wave

The manager of Epidemiology, Carlos Hurtado remarked that in the last few days, on average, three times more cases are reported than three weeks ago, which is a parameter, along with the increase in positivity that went on average from 5 to 14 per cent, the start of a fourth wave.

“We have started the rise of cases, we must take better care of ourselves, we continue to attend to get vaccinated,” he insisted.

One day after the national meeting, the Municipal Emergency Operations Committee (COEM) will meet in Santa Cruz de la Sierra to define circulation measures.

In this regard, Hurtado remarked that the recommendation of the health area is to avoid making the circulation hours more flexible and to reinforce the control of income to the country; air and land terminals, because in other countries, the entry of the Delta variant generated the fourth wave.

According to the authorities, although there is an increase in infections, the increase in the occupation of the Intensive Care Units (ICU) is still slight.

In the country

The Health Minister remarked that after 16 epidemiological weeks of de-escalation, seven increase in infections are reported led by three departments: Chuquisaca, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz. “The fourth wave is an inevitable event and we have to prepare to face it, the best measure is vaccination,” he said.

He added that one of the strategies for containment is the vaccination of 16 and 17-year-old adolescents, a process that began a week ago.
