If someone slips in front of the door …
With ice and snow, accidents can easily occur on the sidewalks in front of properties. This is how owners and tenants protect themselves:

If snow and ice make sidewalks and driveways unsafe, these paths must be cleared. Owners have an obligation to clear and litter, but according to the Federal Insurance Association they can also transfer them to tenants. Anyone who does not comply with this obligation is liable for any resulting damage.
In such cases, personal liability insurance provides protection. She steps in if the owner or tenant has not fulfilled the obligation to clear snow and someone has slipped on an uncleared area in front of their front door during the period.

Private liability insurance also fends off unfounded claims for damages that are made against the insured. That would be the case if someone slips despite cleared and strewn sidewalks or if there is actually no claim for damages for other reasons. (dpa / tmn)
