Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Conflict Ukraine and Russia that never subsided, making a number of parties worried about the potential for World War III to break out.
The crisis began when Russia deployed hundreds of thousands of troops and combat equipment to the border region. The United States accuses them of an invasion, but Moscow denies it.
Russia has accused the US of using conditions to control the region. In addition, they called NATO that should be responsible for this crisis because it continues to add troops in Eastern Europe.
Seeing the conflict, International Relations observer from the Muhammadiyah University of Riau, Fahmi Salsabila, assessed that there was a possibility of World War III due to differences in the interests of NATO-the United States and Moscow.
“I think it can be (World War III), because of the crossing of interests between Russia and the Western Bloc, namely NATO and the US,” said Fahmi when contacted by CNNIndonesia.com, Friday (18/2).
Russia, according to him, has security interests in Ukraine, because this country is directly adjacent to Moscow.
The deployment of troops at the border was also cited as an attempt by Russia to hinder Ukraine’s move to join NATO.
They worry that Ukraine could become a place for NATO to fire missiles at Moscow.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is more pro-Western, although there are some regions that want to join Russia.
“The West and the US will not remain silent if Ukraine is attacked, thus dragging NATO countries and the US to help Ukraine,” continued Fahmi.
The United States, Canada and Britain are known to send troops to Ukraine to help strengthen Kiev’s defenses when rumors of an invasion rage.
Previously, these three countries did send a number of personnel to Ukraine to train the Kiev military.
Furthermore, Fahmi said that Russia is not alone. There are a number of ex-Soviet Union countries that support Russia and China.
China is known to be a rival to the United States in world politics.
“It is feared that a world war will occur because these countries are big countries that have large war fleets and large weapons and also have nuclear weapons,” explained Fahmi again.
China’s support for Russia is contained in a long-term strategic document, he said. In the document, the two countries denounced Washington’s destabilizing role in global security.
It is unlikely that World War III will occur, continue reading on the next page…
