If money becomes value in itself, it makes the world worse

The financial and social value of an activity are drifting further and further apart. The wages of the nursing staff are just one particularly blatant example of this.

If we were to measure professional services by their value for the general public and accordingly reward them, we would not pay the nursing staff with applause.

Lately I have been concerned with the question of whether we actually see things as valuable because they actually have a lot of value – or just because they cost a lot. Since I was earning my own money and no longer barely surviving, I have gradually started to afford things that were previously beyond the realm of the imaginable.
