If you want to take a little break from the rumors before tomorrow night’s trade deadline, we have a nice little statement for you, and it may well get some talk. Once again, it is Draymond Green who opens it without restraint.
We know that friend Draymond has a big mouth, on and off the pitch. Not very long ago, he had stepped up to the plate regarding the treatment of players by their franchise, a big media outlet that had provoked a lot of discussion. Today, the theme is completely different, but we bet that the debates will also be furious. The topic of the day? Draymond Green’s place among the best defenders in history. One of the pillars of the Warriors dynasty, Draymond has forged a rather sympathetic track record with in particular a title of best defender of the year in 2017, year in which he also finished best interceptor of the League, as well as five nominations. in one of the two NBA All-Defensive Teams of the season (three in first, two in second). For the stats point, he runs at 6.9 rebounds, 1.0 against and 1.4 interceptions on average over his entire career and despite his small size for a post 4 (1m98 for 104 kilos), Green has succeeded to establish itself as a benchmark, notably through its versatility and basketball IQ. So clearly, Dray has a few arguments when it comes to players who can really impact a game in their own half. And according to him, he has so many arguments that he finds himself … at the top of the list of the best all-time defenders. Just that.
“I think I am the best defender in history” he said via the podcast Dubs Talk. “100%, that’s my opinion. But I also think I see the game in a much different way than most people. I have a different perspective. When you look at the things that make a good defender: reaction time, toughness, the ability to anticipate action before it develops, and most importantly, rebounding to finish a possession. […] When you look at all of these facets of defensive play, I think I’m pretty good at each one. So I think I’m the best defenseman in NBA history. I stay on it. I choose myself against anyone. “
Bill Russell, Hakeem Olajuwon, Kevin Garnett, Dennis Rodman, Dikembe Mutombo, Scottie Pippen… we know quite a few customers who probably disagree with Draymond, and you can include us in the list even if we don’t weigh too much next to names listed just above. Moreover, a certain Tony “First Team All-Defense” Allen did not hesitate to go find him on Twitter and it caused a nice little exchange in trash talk mode.. But honestly, in the middle of the trade deadline, we do not even want to enter into this kind of discussions which often turn into sterile debates. Draymond Green is one of the best defensemen of his generation, which is already great, and we prefer to use his statement to understand this mentality that guides him every time he sets foot on the floor. What we see especially through his words, it’s the importance he gives to every aspect of the defense, his desire to weigh every minute on that side of the pitch, and above all this confidence that characterizes him, no matter which player there is opposite. So yes, that does not prevent him from igniting but we are not going to sit there and act as if Draymond had no arguments to defend his case, especially since Green is playing in an NBA where the defense seems to have less and less leeway.
We prefer to forget the beginning of his statement to focus on all the elements he has brought to the Warriors for so many years. With his gameplay intelligence and defensive versatility, Draymond Green opened up a lot of possibilities for Golden State in the role of “small-ball 5”, and we are all well aware of the Dubs’ success in this setup.
