/ world today news/ “If Ivan Iskrov does not resign on June 19, I will personally go and beat him to the BNB”. The words are those of the chairman of the Committee on Budget and Finance Menda Stoyanova, spoken two weeks ago at the address of the governor of the Bulgarian National Bank.
Today is June 19, the resignation of Ivan Iskrov – there is nothing, from which we must ask, will there be a fight?
Stoyanova’s words were spoken on June 4, after the Committee on Budget and Finance unanimously adopted the new rules for electing the governor of the BNB. Then Stoyanova explained that they had an arrangement with Iskrov, at the moment when a candidacy for BNB governor was submitted, that he would submit his resignation. The two set the date as June 19.
An hour after the words of the chairman of the budget commission, the BNB stumbled upon her and declared that “no one is authorized to make any statements on behalf of the governor of the BNB. The governor of the BNB does not participate in backroom deals and will not allow himself to be involved in a confrontation between the institutions and a show of power and pressure on the independent Central Bank,” the central bank said at the time.
On Wednesday, four candidacies for the seat of Ivan Iskrov were submitted to the National Assembly. Dimitar Radev, Grigoriy Vazov, Viktor Yotsov and Biser Manolov will compete for the post of governor.
From now on, the procedure is as follows – the applications must be uploaded to the Parliament’s website, and seven days later there will be a hearing in the budget and finance committee and an election in the plenary hall. However, for this to happen, it is necessary for the current governor of the BNB, Ivan Iskrov, to resign. Otherwise, the election of a new governor can take place no earlier than July 10.
