If I already contracted COVID-19, can I get it again?

If I already had the coronavirus, can I get it again? It is possible, but such cases seem to be rare.

It is not unusual to develop some immunity to a virus after an infection, because our bodies are generally better at recognizing and fighting viruses that they have fought before. And that appears to be the case with the new coronavirus, although scientists are still trying to figure out how long any protection might last.

Some reinfections have been confirmed, but two new studies showed that this is highly unusual.

In one of them, only two of 1,265 health workers in Britain who had contracted the virus tested positive again in the following six months. In another study conducted in the United States, only 0.3% of people who had been infected contracted the virus again in the following months, which represents about the same rate of positives as the study from Great Britain.

The findings bode well for the COVID-19 vaccines that are being distributed, which trigger the kind of immune response that studies found to protect humans.
