Residents of New Caledonia, located in the southwestern Pacific, voted to stay within France with more than 96% “yes” in today’s referendum on independence on the island.

The president announced the beginning of a transition period for building a joint project for the region.
The result was welcomed by most politicians: “A very happy moment,” said Republican candidate for the Elysee Palace Valerie Pecres.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanen expressed satisfaction that the referendum took place despite the pandemic.
However, according to far-left politician Jean-Luc Melanchon, the referendum is illegitimate. He called for a boycott of independence-seeking locals.
