If France loses part of its territory, Macron in strong words

Residents of New Caledonia, located in the southwestern Pacific, voted to stay within France with more than 96% “yes” in today’s referendum on independence on the island.

Today, France is more beautiful because New Caledonia has decided to stay in it, “said French President Emmanuel Macron in a solemn address after announcing the outcome of the vote, which left the archipelago in French territory.

Preserving New Caledonia is strategically important for France, which is seeking to strengthen its influence in the Indo-Pacific region amid China’s ambitions. However, the vote passed with 44% turnout and divisions among the population remain, BNR reported.

The president announced the beginning of a transition period for building a joint project for the region.

The result was welcomed by most politicians: “A very happy moment,” said Republican candidate for the Elysee Palace Valerie Pecres.

“Now it remains to restore unity. I will do it!” Said nationalist Marin Le Pen.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanen expressed satisfaction that the referendum took place despite the pandemic.

However, according to far-left politician Jean-Luc Melanchon, the referendum is illegitimate. He called for a boycott of independence-seeking locals.
