celebritiesIdris Elba (51) is taking action against knife violence in the United Kingdom. The British actor launched the ‘Don’t Stop Your Future’ campaign on Monday, with which he hopes to bring the problem to political attention. To support the campaign, Elba also released the single ‘Knives Down’.
Idris Elba cannot remain silent when it comes to “the lives lost to brutal and heartless crimes,” the actor said. “It is high time that the urgency we feel as parents, and in our communities, is addressed by our politicians,” the actor wrote in a statement.
“Knife crime is a topic I am very passionate about and I want to use my voice to raise awareness,” the film, TV and music star wrote. “Together we can put an end to this epidemic!” The initiative aims to put serious youth violence at the top of the political agenda, where Idris believes it belongs. “It is easy to feel that the increasing violence cannot be stopped. But parliament must give this issue the attention it deserves.” According to statistics for the period from July 2022 to June 2023, a total of 247 people lost their lives to knife violence in England and Wales.
The star warned against complacency. “In August, the government promised to ban zombie knives and machetes,” he noted. “But four months later, the necessary legislation has only just begun its slow journey through parliament. We ask for the ban to be implemented immediately.” The name “zombie knives” refers to ornate knives or bladed weapons inspired by zombie films.
Fuel for dreams
‘The Suicide Squad’ actor concludes: “To the political leaders reading this, this could be the moment we turn the tide. The year the numbers reverse. It is not too late to end this nightmare for our children and instead fuel their dreams.”
Elba is mainly known as an actor in series such as ‘Luther’. He also works as a DJ and has released music before. He probably achieved his greatest success with the song ‘Boasty’ by Wiley from 2019. His voice could be heard in it.
