IDR 24 Million for Ice Cream

Brasilia

Credit card issuance by former President Brazil Jair Bolsonaro and the ranks of officials from the era of his government were released to the public. The fantastic amount of expenses and details of credit card bills that were disclosed to the public surprised many.

As reported AFP, Saturday (14/1/2023), Bolsonaro’s credit card bill was released to the public via the Brazilian government’s official website on Friday (13/1) local time. It says on the bill that more than 27.6 million Real (Rp 83 billion) was charged on Bolsonaro’s credit cards during his four years in office.

Unlike his predecessors, Bolsonaro enforces confidentiality rules for issuing presidential credit cards among other official information. The secrecy rules began to be lifted by Brazil’s new President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvawho took office earlier this year.

Bolsonaro and 21 of his team members had access to presidential credit cards during his four years in office.

Adjusted for inflation, the full amount charged to Bolsonaro’s presidential credit card accounted for nearly half of the total credit card spending under Lula’s administration in the first term of his presidency, which began in 2003, although Lula mostly used the presidential credit card for accommodation when traveling abroad.

Before taking office as President of Brazil this year, Lula da Silva served as president for two terms, from 2003 to 2010.

Bolsonaro has previously frequently claimed that he did not charge ‘one cent’ on the presidency’s credit card.

But an analysis of spending documents recently disclosed to the public by the Uol News website shows that spending currently equivalent to more than US$235,000 (Rp 3.6 billion) was spent by Bolsonaro on vacation in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
