Idiot test: The MPU is “a tough test” – Freiburg

Alcohol, drugs, frenzy: around 800 people from Freiburg and the district are invited to the so-called MPU every year. Many do not pass this examination without professional preparation.

Around 800 people from Freiburg and the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district are invited to the medical-psychological examination (MPU), popularly known as the idiot test, every year. Anyone who has lost their driver’s license because of alcohol, drugs, frenzy, massive violations of the law outside of the traffic or a lack of character must pass this test in order to be able to sit behind the wheel again.

Who is affected?

They come from all walks of life – and, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, almost 95 percent of them are men retirement, “says psychologist and psychotherapist Daniela Moll, who prepares those affected in courses for the examination. There are students who have discovered party life for themselves and quickly got used to it. Or the middle-aged person who tries to balance the stress at work with a drink or two in the evening.
