IDI Collaborates to Improve Monitoring of Monkeypox Transmission

IDI collaborates with 6 professional organizations to raise awareness on monkeypox

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Task Force Monkeypox The Executive Board of the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) collaborated with professional medical organizations to improve monitoring of cases of monkeypox transmission.

“We are collaborating with six professional organizations to improve the ability of doctors to increase awareness of monkeypox (monkey smallpox),” said the Head of the Monkeypox Task Force for the Executive Board. WAS Hanny Nilasari in a virtual press conference which was attended from Jakarta, Friday (5/8/2022).

Professional organizations that collaborate with IDI in monitoring the transmission of monkeypox include the Indonesian Association of Internal Medicine Experts (PAPDI), the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI), the Indonesian Skin Specialist Association (PERDOSKI), the Indonesian Association of Clinical Microbiology Specialists (PAMKI), and Indonesian Association of Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Specialists.

“We, through professional organizations, immediately report if we find a suspected case, even though it has not been confirmed, ask to report it to the Health Office,” said Hanny.

On August 2, 2022, the IDI Monkeypox Task Force has submitted recommendations to all local governments, health workers, and residents to increase awareness of the risk of monkeypox transmission. The Task Force also publishes case findings so that the general public can increase awareness of the transmission of monkeypox and immediately report if they experience or find people with symptoms similar to monkeypox.

“We support contact tracing if there are suspected cases of monkeypox. Health workers are also asked to wear protective equipment when handling patients,” said Hanny.

According to him, one of the risk factors that need to be observed is the return of pilgrims from Saudi Arabia. He said that puskesmas officers should also check for skin disorders on members of the hajj pilgrims who had just returned to the country.

“In some areas we have visited PMI and related health centers because many hajjis have just returned from abroad. In PMI, we are instructed before taking blood samples, check for abnormalities in the skin, symptoms of fever, and others,” he said.

He explained that the symptoms of monkeypox in the form of rashes and swellings filled with pus can appear on body parts such as the face, hands, arms, stomach, trunk, and back. “It’s the same on the palms of the hands, it can be on the hands, eyes, mouth, or in the mouth. If the immune system is good, usually the condition is good or the symptoms are only local. If the immune system is not good, the condition can get worse,” he said.

Hanny said that nine suspected monkeypox cases found in Indonesia had been confirmed negative, but there was one suspected case in Central Java which was still under investigation.
