“Ideological choice from the Democratic Party” – Il Tempo

A daily reality that for many, too many months has now turned into a dramatic criticality to face. An emergency, which requires solutions that are as clear-cut as they are immediate. A theme, on the contrary, which manages to divide politics and on which the left makes its shop interests prevail over those of the country. The landings of migrants continue, thanks to the political crisis in Libya and, above all, in Tunisia and the atavistic indifference of the European Union. The government led by Giorgia Meloni has thus decided to put its hand to the rules that regulate some steps, first of all that which concerns the so-called special protection. A way to begin to better face a situation which, in view of the summer months, risks becoming explosive. However, the (few) left-wing governors (remaining) have said no to the decision to decree a state of emergency by the center-right government and, above all, to the hypothesis of establishing, also in Tuscany, Emilia Romagna, Puglia and Campania, for repatriations (the so-called cpr). A position, that of the four red governors (Eugenio Giani, Stefano Bonaccini, Vincenzo De Luca and Michele Emiliano) rejected without appeal by the President of Calabria, Roberto Occhiuto. «I suspect that they are decisions oriented more by political sensitivities, given that these are the only four centre-left regions, rather than by objective reasons. I govern a region that risks being overwhelmed by flows, so I understand how important a state of emergency can be”.

Attilio Fontana explains the difference between a technical and administrative question and a purely ideological one. «It is one thing to ask for autonomy over things that are actually within our competence, it is another thing to pretend to ask for autonomy when it is exclusively a matter of exploitation, as my colleagues know very well. This is not a question of autonomy, it is an ideological question that they want to raise, unfortunately demonstrating that they are not independent of their parties”. Even tougher, more peremptory in his criticism of his progressive colleagues, the president of Abruzzo, Marco Marsilio. «The governors of the Democratic Party? I am sorry for their decision. Usually the Regions have always expressed positions with a large cross sharing. I register that since there has been a right-wing government this institutional approach has been failing, in order to obey the diktat of a party that wants to campaign on the issue of migrants”.

Mattarellate on the EU:

A condition, the current one, which greatly worries the Sicilian governor, Renato Schifani. «The emergency exists, we have been living it in Sicily for a month already, since we were overwhelmed by landings. Thousands of people have invaded the Lampedusa hotspot which can only accommodate a few hundred migrants. The Region has done its part and lent a hand, we have managed to get blankets, shoes, food in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior. The reception of basic necessities is sacred, but a concrete policy is needed to manage these arrivals. We are tired of hearing statements that can be shared on a purely theoretical level but far from any concrete feasibility. We must act, we are at a point of no return ».
