A group of specialists representing the University of Cincinnati in the US state of Ohio, named the material, which, according to scientists, is one of the best for the manufacture of protective masks in the context of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. This is what the researchers called natural silk from silkworm cocoons grown in ecologically clean conditions.
Scientists note that silk contains copper, which has disinfecting properties. Also, silk masks are less wet and less difficult to breathe than those made from many other materials. In particular, cotton, in contrast to silk, according to experts, “absorbs moisture like a sponge.”
The research was published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE.
