IDC: Smartphone Shipments Grow 5.5 Percent in 2021 Thanks to 5G Adoption

Jakarta, Selular.ID – Global smartphone shipments are expected to grow by 5.5 percent by 2021. According to the latest data International Data Corporation (IDC) also pointed out that the global smartphone market could achieve a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.6 percent over the forecast period 2020 to 2025, due to the strong push from 5G adoption.

Global smartphone shipments are expected to increase by 13.9 percent in the first quarter of this year, higher than the first quarter of last year.

The report also estimates that by 2021, 5G mobile phones could account for 40 percent of total volume. Overall, 2021 is expected to post a 5.5 percent growth in global smartphone shipments. Not only 5G, IDC noted that the demand for smartphones also contributed to the increase in shipments.

Meanwhile this year, smartphone shipments in China are expected to grow 6 percent and 3.5 percent in the US. 5G developments in both markets and the success of Apple’s iPhone 12 5G phone series are expected to boost smartphone shipments this year. And it is undeniable that this is also closely related to the commitment of every cellphone brand, which wants to launch mobile devices that support 5G this year.

IDC also stated that more than 40 percent of the global volume of smartphone shipments in 2021 will likely be all 5G smartphones. This is further expected to grow to 69 percent by 2025.

In addition, the average selling price (ASP) for 5G smartphones is expected to fall to $ 404 or around Rp.5.6 million by the end of 2025 due to the stiff competition in the 5G Android phone class.
