IDC: 2021 Global Smartphone Market Grows, Sluggish Q4

Selular.IDIDC posted a fourth quarter report for the global smartphone market, covering the entirety of 2021, also summing up its performance for the full year.

According to the data, the smartphone market as a whole saw a 5.7% increase in shipments despite the sluggish last quarter of the year with a 3.2% decline.

The top five companies remain Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo. Meanwhile, other vendors who are members of ‘Others’ experienced a 12.5% decline overall.

The second half of 2021 failed to live up to predictions, said Ryan Reith, group VP at IDC. The company’s biggest problem is the shortage of components, and that will continue into the first half of 2022 as well.

The projection is that the global smartphone market will grow again in the second quarter of this year, and demand remains strong in many markets, as consumers are attracted to 5G products and foldable devices.

In Q4 alone, Apple managed to sell more phones than any other company, thanks to the iPhone 13 series, with an estimated 85 million Apple devices sold.

Samsung and Xiaomi follow on the next list, and they are the only two companies, out of the top 5, to record positive changes every year.

Nabila Popal, research director at IDC, said that despite the problems in the industry, the 5.7% growth is a positive thing as it will be even bigger.

He expects there to be “significant pent-up demand in nearly all regions”, and that should help the market perform to lift once supply constraints ease towards the middle of the year.
