IDB Approves $415 Million Credit Line for Bogotá Metro Expansion

The Board of Directors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved today in Washington a line of credit for 415 million dollars, with an initial operation of 50 million dollars to finance Line 2 of the underground Bogotá Metro to Suba and Engativá.

“The Metro Network does not stop, and while the works of the First Line in the city progress, we have just received this important announcement from Washington, which continues to strengthen the financing of Line 2 of the underground Bogotá Metro to Suba and Engativá “which has already started its international public bidding process,” announced the Mayor of Bogotá, Claudia López within the framework of the launch of the Sustainable and Safe Mobility Plan of Bogotá held this morning at the Boys and Girls Park.

And he added: “this line of credit for 415 million dollars is added to the 50 million dollars signed this year with the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the framework financing agreement for 255 million dollars signed with the CAF last July 17 reiterating the investor confidence that the Multilateral Bank has in the development of sustainable mobility for Bogotá. “Three out of four banks have already committed resources, which shows once again that Line 2 of the underground Bogotá Metro to Suba and Engativá continues and will be put out to tender next year.”

Leonidas Narváez, General Manager of the Bogotá Metro Company (EMB) explained that “with this line of credit from the IDB, the Ministry of Finance will be able to authorize the EMB to carry out the credit operation for 50 million dollars. This is the second credit operation that we processed with multilateral banks for the same purpose for a total of up to 1.5 billion dollars that will be financed with said entities.

In less than two years, this administration managed to legally, technically and financially structure the Second Metro Line (L2MB), to consolidate the Metro Network as the backbone of the city’s mass transportation system.

After the technical, legal and financial structuring of the project, carried out through the National Development Finance Agency, the commitment of resources was achieved through the co-financing agreement, the approval of the credit quotas and the sovereign guarantee of the Nation. , to advance with the signing of credit contracts with multilateral banks.

Line 2 of the Bogotá Metro (L2MB), which will benefit nearly 2.5 million inhabitants, will connect the towns of Suba and Engativá to 72nd Street, in Chapinero, along 15.5 kilometers; It will have 11 stations and will generate more than 11,000 jobs during its construction stage.
